Is it hardly any wonder then that drug abuse teens are a problem in our society? The UK by way of example, has the inglorious reputation of being top of all tables for teenage alcohol and drugs consumption and teen pregnancy amongst other things.
Obviously the decline of moral standards goes hand in hand with teen drug abuse. Drugs by definition affect the way people feel, the way they think and the way they behave. Add them to the mix of teenage hormonal excitement and emotional uncertainty and things can get out of hand. It is a recipe for disaster and some social commentators in the UK and other parts of the globe, would suggest that is where we are heading with current trends. But you can do something about it.
Drugs have affected young people’s attitude towards goal attainment and effort. They fit in very easily with the culture of something for nothing with its fast food, fast celebrity and fast fun.
We are all attracted by fun. Drinking amongst teens is fueled by advertising designed to give the impression that having a drink is all about having a laugh. Despite the fact that heavy drinking has heavy consequences on the body, young people bounce back, encouraged by the pressure of the group.
So how do you break through the influence of their peers, which is a big factor in drug and alcohol abuse and actually get young people to step back and think about the consequences of their actions? Get them to really think for themselves? Get them to be themselves?
The highs of the “I want it now” culture fade as fast as the drugs wear off. Real achievement brings real highs - natural highs that can be relived over and over. These are the highs that stay with a person and are the real source of self-confidence and personal stability.
